Appalachian Distillery was born when two former coal miners decided to trade their hard hats for copper stills. Dwayne Freeman — a fifth-generation Hatfield — and James Hager — a sixth-generation McCoy — brought their families' centuries-old mountain tradition above ground and made it legal.
Dwayne's grandfather was imprisoned for moonshine-making. His grandfather's grandfather made it before that. When West Virginia finally legalized small-scale distilling, Dwayne and James were ready. In July 2014, Appalachian Distillery opened its doors in Ripley — and the mountains finally had their distillery.
Everything is made the right way: West Virginia grain, mashed on-site, fermented and distilled under the same roof, then bottled using certified arsenic-free US glass. When we say 100% West Virginia Made, we mean every step.
